The Planets
Oil painting & music / Pintura al óleo y música“The Planets” is an audiovisual exhibition created by Pampa Louzao in 2017/18 in his studio in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The project offers a view of outer space while inviting the viewer to explore their own inner creative universe. It is the artist’s interpretation of the planets in our Solar System, composed of eight oil paintings on canvas, each accompanied by an ambient electronic music piece specially produced for the corresponding work.
The inspiration came from the classical orchestral suite The Planets, Op. 32, composed by Gustav Holst between 1914 and 1916. The paintings emerge from the fusion of two major influences: scientific research and mythology. On the scientific side, the process involved studying the physical composition of each planet—its movement, density, satellites, and anomalies. Astronomical photography inspired the color palettes and textures of each piece. On the mythological side, Greco-Roman myths were used to personify each planet—such as Mars, the god of war, or Venus, the goddess of love—reflecting how ancient civilizations explained life and death through celestial symbolism.
The result is a series of eight paintings marked by obsessive detail and a vibrant balance of color. These surrealist compositions, subtly influenced by abstract figurative aesthetics, are enhanced through their musical counterpart. Together, image and sound transport the viewer to an expanded space of possibilities, where the cosmos becomes a mirror of the human experience.
